Ectropion and entropion are the medical terms for an eyelid that rolls away or towards the eyeball.
Eyelid Malposition
To function correctly, the eyelids must maintain their normal position against the eye In some patients, the eyelid becomes rotated towards (entropion) or away (ectropion) from the eye. This may occur as a result of ageing, trauma, burns, or injury to the facial nerve.
Entropion: Entropion is a condition where the eyelid turns inward, causing the eyelashes and skin to rub against the eye surface. This can result in discomfort, redness, and potential damage to the cornea (the clear front part of the eye).
Ectropion: Ectropion is the opposite condition, where the eyelid turns outward, causing the eye to become excessively exposed. Ectropion can lead to dryness, tearing, irritation and scarring of the cornea.
